Re-Visioning Belief - Trinity College Study Day

August 8th, 2017

Re-Visioning Belief: Study Day

INTERPRETING THE BIBLE IN TODAY’S FRACTURED WORLD

Dealing with the difficult issues facing us today can often feel like being faced with an unpalatable choice between inflexible traditional demands or accepting that ‘anything goes’ in modern society; this day will explore a middle way of being faithful to the Bible while serving our people and culture. The day will be led by international biblical scholars Dr Meg Warner and Professor Richard Burridge.

Dr Warner will challenge ideas about the ‘fixed’ meaning of the Scriptures, discussing Jewish reading approaches as well as techniques for revision discernible in the biblical materials themselves, before exploring some of the consequences for reading today, particularly in connection with modern ‘hot-button topics’ such as marriage, the environment, claims of sovereignty over land, and immigration.

Professor Burridge will address some of the thornier issues for biblical interpretation raised by his experiences of working with both approaches supporting Apartheid in South Africa (such as the Dutch Reformed Church’s justification of it) and its opponents (including Archbishop Desmond Tutu and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission), as well as the implications of this for contemporary debates within the Anglican Communion, especially over sexuality. He will discuss possible approaches for churches engaged in biblical interpretation to avoid reading that are genuine, pious, prayerful – and yet come to be viewed as simply ‘wrong’.
